D-8341 is depicted here wearing the markings of the 322nd Squadron, the oldest squadron in the Royal Netherlands Air Force based at Leeuwarden airbase in the north of the country. 322 flew the F-104 in the role it was intended for as a fighter and interceptor, the unit continued to fly the 1-0-4 untill the early eighties when they transitioned to the F-16A Fighting Falcon. The usual configuration for air defence sorties were two sidewinders under the fuselage, tiptanks and often underwing tanks as well to increase range. |
